About Henry Brewer, Surveying California, 1860-64
A professor of chemistry at Washington College in Pennsylvania, William Brewer joined the staff of California's State Geologist in 1860. This database is a collection of letters and journal entries by Brewer while living in the state, before returning to the East in 1864. It provides vivid accounts of taking part in a state survey that started in the south and ended along the border with Oregon. It also contains detailed descriptions of social, agricultural, and economic life in the state during the survey. For researchers of early California, this can be an interesting and informative narrative.
