About Germany & Austria, Directories of Military and Marine Officers, 1500-1939

Historical Background:

Germany became a unified nation in 1871. The area that became Germany in 1871 was formerly comprised of separate sovereign nations (Prussia, Bavaria, etc), each of which maintained their own army. After unification, the German Imperial Army maintained much of the organizational structure of the formerly independent armies. These armies were incorporated into the German Imperial Army as component armies, the Prussian Army being the largest.
